Assiniboine Chorus is a fabulous group of women who gather together in celebration of the art form known as barbershop music. We are a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, a non-profit, worldwide organization of women singers committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education, competition and performance.

 

The Assiniboine Chorus took Second Place in the 2014 Northern Lights Region 6 Sweet Adelines International Division A Chorus Contest. We can be heard throughout the year, singing for civic and charitable organizations, private groups, church

es, community events and fundraisers.

 


 Chartered on January 5, 1976. Assiniboine Chorus is proudly celebrating 40 years as a Sweet Adelines chapter!

You can check your words and Choreo on the website. Gayle and Joyce will be at the hall at 630 p.m. on Tuesday evening to refresh the Choreo. As quickly as we can get in the gym we will begin and will use our physical warm up time too. If yu arrive after we have begun please just quietly join in.

A MESSAGE FROM REGARDING OLD A CAPPELLA

Hi all: Our team has talked about this song and has decided to eliminate some of the former choreo.

 

Here is the new plan: Note - When we are able to portray the "mood" of a song, our audience feels it and responds. This is the joy of performing.

Intro: Shoo be do wop bbop bop. - move rhythmically (snapping side to side). Start to
Right. Continue through to -

"Hoo hoo hoo" - Bar 10- 3 flapper hand moves at your sides with hips moving.
Right side first.

No planned moves till page 6, bar 62 and 63. There is one "rest" in each of these bars.
We will clap once on each "rest".

On the "breath" in bar 67 one snap to emphasize the "bones away to bed".
Page 8 Bar 87 - Repeat Intro.

Bar 95 - Big Ending. - "0h, Oh Oh" Raise arms slowly filling the whole bar.
Bar 96 - "Yeah" - hand flutters.

DUES

Please pay Bonnie your April, May dues. This years monthly dues are $40.00 from May - June 2018 and then from September 2018 - April 2019. Our newly auditioned members please talk to Bonnie regarding dues.

 

Please note: Board approval is required for all expenses for all committees and general membership.

 

CHOREOGRAPHY SESSION WITH SUSAN KRISNIK

Coaching May 5th with Susan Krisnik. Our session will begin at 10:00AM with an hour break for lunch (please bring your own lunch, water etc). We will continue following lunch till approximately 4:00pm.


Our session is being held at St Bartholomew Church, 881 Autumnwood Drive, Windsor Park.


Susan's qualifications include:  
Visual Performance
Choreography
Physical Warmups
Focus and Energy
Show Package and Script Writing.
Too quote our Region 6 Faculty Coordinator - "It will be a fun day with Susan".  
Not only will it be fun and exciting we will learn so much from Susan on how to improve our stage presence hence our performances.

RE: CONTEST WITH THE MEN

Below is the information on the schedule for the contest we are singing in on May 12th

 

We need to advise the barbershoppers a list of those interested in purchasing a lunch and/or an afterglow meal. The cost for each of these is $15.00 per person, to be paid on the day of the event. You may also bring your own lunch if you prefer to do that instead. We will singing last in the contest which is scheduled from 11:00 am to 12:30. We will also have a chorus evaluation session with the judges sometime between 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. If you want to be included in both the contest and the judge evaluation (which is very very interesting if you have never had this experience) you will need to plan to be there for the whole day.

 

Also, be reminded – the schedule is tentative so our stage and the evaluation times could be changed. With only 4 choruses (including us) they may not need all the time set aside for the contest.

 

PLEASE ADVISE ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IF YOU PLAN TO ENJOY LUNCH AND/OR THE AFTERGLOW.

Friday – Pre-Glow 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm (at the venue, Room 1531) Price at the door $10.00 – includes cold cuts, warmed garlic sausage, cheese, chips, pickles, fresh rye bread & spreads, and 1 beer/wine. There will be a cash bar.

Saturday - 8:00 am - 10:30 am Stage open for inspection

11:00 am - 12:30 pm Chorus Competition

12:30pm - 1:30 pm Lunch ($15.00 - includes Potato salad, asst'd sandwiches, cookies, coffee, tea, juices, etc)

1:30 pm - 2:15 pm Quartet Competition

2:15 pm - 2:45 pm Mini Show by all Four Choruses and the Quartets

2:45 pm - 3:00 pm Awards

3:00 pm - 4:30 pm Chorus Evaluations

4:30 pm - 6:00 pm Quartet Evaluations

4:30 pm After Glow Room Opens

 

The After Glow room will be open till 10:00. Cash Bar. Meal $15:00 includes asst'd pizza, Chicken wings, asst'd cheese & relish w/ crackers, Veggies & dip. fresh fruit kabobs.

HALL

There is a small group using the hall before we arrive. Please do not go into the hall while they are there. This is their time and we have to respect that. The hall is ours at 6:30 p.m.

Whoever is the last one in the hall once rehearsal is finished - please pickup any belongings left behind also turn off all the lights. Also please check all the taps in the bathrooms and check that the toilets are flushed and not running. It is now time to wear your indoor shoes in the hall, there is a carpet outside the gym door for shoes/boots etc. Make sure the front door is locked too.

 

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR ELVIRA - NEXT FRIDAY

A Memorial service will be held at Zion Apostolic Church, May 4, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. 305 Machray Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Flowers are gratefully declined. Elvira passed away on November 26, 2017. Elvira was a 50 year member of Sweet Adelines. Elvira was very dedicated to our chorus for many years she held the position of Membership Chair.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE

Our Sherrie has decided she would like to be a Co-Director due to health and adequate travel and free time in order to function happily.

We as a Board have set up a Search Committee to find a Co-Director or Director for our chorus. I am attaching an ad to this effect . Please copy and if you know of anyone who would be interested give the ad to them. An application is on our website for any potential candidate to apply.

 

MANAGEMENT TEAM

On Tuesday evening the Management Team met and a consensus by the Team for the three executive positions as per our Draft Standing Rules - the results are Team Coordinator - Shirley Christie, Finance Manager Bonnie Van Norman, Secretary Rosemary Komadowski the Coordinators will be for the Team will be discussed at our next meeting. Any questions or decisions for the Team can be directed to a Team Member. Other Team members are:

Donna Wills, Sandie Isaac, Louise Malo. Becki Ammeter. The Director is part of the Team too.

Thank you for all your support for my daughter for the MS Walk. It is really appreciated - Vanessa's Team will be walking in Selkirk, Manitoba May 27th. Last year Vanessa was able to do the walk in her wheel chair she will be doing the same this year.
